What is Magnesium?
Magnesium is the one of the most abundant mineral in the human body.
It plays several important roles in the health of your body and brain. Magnesium is an essential ion to the human body, playing an instrumental role in supporting and sustaining health and life.
One of magnesium’s main roles is acting as a cofactor or helper molecule in the biochemical reactions continuously performed by enzymes.
In fact magnesium is involved in hundreds of reactions in your body, including:
1.Energy creation: magnesium helps convert food into energy.
2. Protein formation: magnesium helps create new proteins from amino acids.
3.Gene maintenance: magnesium helps create and repair DNA and RNA.
4.Nervous system regulation: magnesium helps regulate neurotransmitters, which send messages throughout your brain and nervous system.
High magnesium foods include dark leafy greens, seeds, beans, fish, whole grains, nuts, dark chocolate, yogurt, avocados, bananas, spinach, squash and pumpkin seeds, lima beans, tuna, brown rice, almonds and non-fat yogurt.
Magnesium plays an important physiological role particularly in the brain, heart, and skeletal muscles. Magnesium is an abundant mineral in the body, is naturally present in many foods, added to other food products, available as a dietary supplement, and present in some medicines such as antacids and laxatives.
Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. Magnesium is required for energy production, oxidative phosphorylation, and glycolysis. It contributes to the structural development of bone and is required for the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and the antioxidant glutathione.
Magnesium also plays a role in the active transport of calcium and potassium ions across cell membranes, a process that is important to nerve impulse conduction, muscle contraction, and normal heart rhythm.
The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for magnesium for adults is 310–420 mg depending on age and gender.
Continue to be conscious and proactive about making sure you are getting this essential mineral in your diet and eating lifestyle!
