What is Quercetin?

Flavonoids are present in vegetables, fruits, grains, tea, and wine.

The beneficial effects of flavonoids like quercetin come from their ability to function as antioxidants inside your body. Free radicals are unstable molecules that may cause cellular damage when their levels become too high.

Quercetin, a flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables, has unique biological properties that may improve mental/physical performance and reduce infection risk. These properties form the basis for potential benefits to overall health and disease resistance.

Quercetin is categorized as a flavonol, one of the six subclasses of flavonoid compounds. The name has been used since 1857, and is derived from quercetum (oak forest), after Quercus. It is a naturally occurring polar auxin transport inhibitor.

Quercetin is a chemical found naturally in a number of foods including apples, onions, teas, berries, and red wine. This flavonoid is also found in some herbs such as ginkgo biloba and St. John’s wort.

Quercetin acts as an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals—the chemical by-products that harm cell membranes and damage DNA. Available as a dietary supplement, quercetin also possesses antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties.

Quercetin is used for treating conditions of the heart and blood vessels including “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis), high cholesterol, heart disease, and circulation problems. It is also used for diabetes, cataracts, hay fever, peptic ulcer, schizophrenia, inflammation, asthma, gout, viral infections, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), preventing cancer, and for treating chronic infections of the prostate. Quercetin is also used to increase endurance and improve athletic performance.

Quercetin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects which might help reduce prostate inflammation.

The antioxidant quercetin is sometimes called the “master flavonoid.” Allegedly people say it’s one of the best natural antihistamines.

Most people have heard of flavonoids, plant-based antioxidant pigments that are being celebrated for many alleged health benefits. Flavonoids give plants their color and belong to the class of polyphenols. Polyphenols have become a hot topic recently with some studies suggesting their benefits in preventing heart disease, cancer, and other chronic diseases.
