Human Body Organs Anatomy (Liver)

The liver works together with other important organs to digest, absorb, and process food. The liver’s main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body. The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Your liver functions as a filter, removing toxins from the blood and helping to process nutrients. Milk thistle and dandelion provide support for healthy liver function. Milk thistle contains silymarin, a powerful antioxidant that some studies have shown may help protect the liver from free radicals.

How does dandelion help the liver?

The dandelion may improve the functioning of our liver. It removes toxins, boosts the flow of bile, and replenishes lost electrolytes.

Dandelion root has long been held as a “liver tonic” in folk medicine. Preliminary studies suggest this is due, in part, to its ability to increase the flow of bile.
Naturopaths believe that dandelion root tea could help detoxify the liver, help with skin and eye problems, and relieve symptoms of liver disease. A 2017 study suggests that polysaccharides in dandelion may indeed be beneficial to liver function.

Compounds in the dandelion root may cause an increase in bile production. The increase in bile helps to improve digestion. The increased bile production also helps the liver to digest foods and remove toxins quickly and efficiently cleaning the liver. Dandelion is also full of vitamins and nutrients, which promote hepatic healing.

How Does Milk Thistle Help The Liver?

Milk thistle is sometimes used as a natural treatment for liver problems. These liver problems include cirrhosis, jaundice, hepatitis, and gallbladder disorders. Some studies claim milk thistle may also provide heart benefits by lowering cholesterol levels.

Milk thistle is an herbal remedy derived from the milk thistle plant, also known as Silybum marianum.

The active ingredients in milk thistle are a group of plant compounds collectively known as silymarin. Silymarin is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the liver from free radicals.

Silymarin is considered to be the main component of milk thistle seeds, but the terms “milk thistle” and “silymarin” often are used interchangeably. Historically, people have used milk thistle for liver disorders, such as hepatitis and cirrhosis, and gallbladder problems.

Silymarin’s herbal remedy is known as milk thistle extract. Milk thistle extract has a high amount of silymarin that has been concentrated from the milk thistle plant.
The silymarin extracted from milk thistle is known to have antioxidant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.

Milk thistle has traditionally been used to treat liver and gallbladder disorders, promote breast milk production, prevent and treat cancer and even protect the liver from snake bites, alcohol and other environmental poisons.

The liver does many important things including making bile, which helps carry away waste and break down fats in the small intestine during digestion, making certain proteins for blood plasma, making cholesterol and special proteins to help carry fats through the body.
