Coenzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10, is a compound that helps generate energy in your cells.

Your body produces CoQ10 naturally, but its production tends to decrease with age. Fortunately, you can also get CoQ10 through supplements or foods.

What is CoQ10?

CoQ10 is a compound made by your body and stored in the mitochondria of your cells. The mitochondria are in charge of producing energy. They also protect cells from oxidative damage and disease-causing bacteria or viruses.

CoQ10 production decreases as you age. Thus, older people seem to be deficient in this compound.

Research has shown that CoQ10 plays several key roles in your body. One of its primary functions is to help generate energy in your cells. It’s involved in making adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is involved in energy transfer within cells.

Its other crucial role is to serve as an antioxidant and protect cells from oxidative damage. Excessive amounts of free radicals lead to oxidative damage, which can interfere with regular cell functioning. This is known to cause many health conditions.

CoQ10 is the primary antioxidant the human cell provides to protect and support mitochondria. Without this vital molecule, the level of ATP that the mitochondria produce drops, the energy that is available to that tissue decreases, and dysfunction and health conditions can potentially develop.

Mitochondria are essentially independent organisms (primitive bacteria) that merged with our cells eons ago. Some have called this merger “the grand bargain of life.”  That is, the mitochondriaagree” to produce the energy the human organism needs (in the form of ATP), and in return, the human cell provides the mitochondria with the antioxidants it needs to protect itself from the damage that would otherwise occur from all this energy production.

Foods High in CoQ10

The highest concentrations of CoQ10 in our own bodies are found in the liver, kidneys and heart, so it makes sense that the highest concentrations of CoQ10 from food sources would exist within organ meats. There are other options, including some vegetarian and vegan sources of CoQ10 as well.

Foods high in CoQ10 include beef sirloin, beef liver, beef heart, chicken, chicken liver, pork, pork liver, red mackerel (fish), rainbow trout, salmon, boiled soybeans, oranges, broccoli and avocado.

Why Our Bodies Need CoQ10?

Coenzyme Q10 helps keep your cells energized. It’s a key component in converting the nutrients you eat into energy your body can use, and it isn’t just humans that need it. Plants, animals and bacteria need it too. It is truly ubiquitous and one of the most basic nutrients required for life.

CoQ10 contributes to our energy levels and supports cardiovascular health, as well as the health of our muscles, nerves, kidneys, brain and skin.

CoQ10 also works as an antioxidant that helps protect our cells from free radicals and oxidative stress. It is even used in some anti-aging and skin care products for its antioxidant effects. Since free radicals and oxidative stress are major contributors to some signs of aging, CoQ10 may be considered as a longevity-enhancing nutrient.

CoQ10 seems to help treat heart failure by improving heart function, increasing ATP production and limiting oxidative damage.

Exercise performance can be affected by oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. CoQ10 can help lower oxidative damage, promote exercise capacity and decrease fatigue.

Oxidative stress can affect muscle function, and thus, exercise performance. Similarly, abnormal mitochondrial function can reduce muscle energy, making it hard for muscles to contract efficiently and sustain exercise.

Supplementing with CoQ10 can help increase power during exercise and reduce fatigue, both of which can improve exercise performance.
