What are Phytonutrients?

Phytonutrients also known as Phytochemicals are chemical compounds produced by plants, generally to help them thrive or thwart competitors, predators, or pathogens. The name comes from Greek φυτόν, meaning ‘plant‘. Some phytochemicals have been used as poisons and others as traditional medicine.

Phytonutrients are organic components found in plants that are thought to promote human health. The term “phyto” originates from a Greek word meaning plant. Fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and teas are all rich sources of phytonutrients. Many plant-based foods including fruits and vegetables contain a number of different phytonutrients, even if they have been studied primarily for just one or two. That is why there is not only a need to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables in general, but also to increase variety to ensure the best possible benefits.

What are the health benefits of phytonutrients?

Among the benefits of phytonutrients are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Phytonutrients may also enhance immunity and intercellular communication, repair DNA damage from exposure to toxins, detoxify carcinogens and alter estrogen metabolism.

turmeric-root-and-powder

Turmeric and especially its most active compound curcumin have many scientifically-proven health benefits, such as the potential to prevent heart disease, Alzheimer’s and cancer. It’s a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and may also help improve symptoms of depression and arthritis.

Turmeric belongs to the same family as ginger, and it does resemble ginger. Like ginger, it is a very common spice that is native to Asia, but these days it has become popular in places that have a warm and humid climate. The rhizomes of the turmeric plant have been used for a very long time in cooking because of the ability to add taste to food and also in medicine because of the numerous health benefits. Research has shown a lot of these benefits, but there are still some potential health benefits that are yet to be proven.

Turmeric is good for heart health because of a couple of reasons. One of these reasons is because it has anti-inflammatory properties. In heart health, chronic inflammation is usually a hazardous thing that can lead to many heart problems. When you take turmeric regularly, the anti-inflammatory effect may help keep you safe from some of these heart problems. Also, the curcumin in turmeric may help in the improvement of the lining of blood vessels, thus, ensuring healthy blood pressure.

Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.

Chronic inflammation contributes to many common Western diseases. Curcumin can suppress many molecules known to play major roles in inflammation.

The main reason antioxidants are so beneficial is that they protect your body from free radicals. Curcumin is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure. In addition, curcumin boosts the activity of your body’s own antioxidant enzymes.

Turmeric Nuticert Certified Farm - Cambodia

Curcumin has powerful antioxidant effects. It neutralizes free radicals on its own but also stimulates your body’s own antioxidant enzymes.

Curcumin boosts levels of the brain hormone (BDNF) brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which increases the growth of new neurons and fights various degenerative processes in your brain.

Curcumin may help reverse many steps in the heart disease process. Perhaps the main benefit of curcumin when it comes to heart disease is improving the function of the endothelium, which is the lining of your blood vessels.

Curcumin has beneficial effects on several factors known to play a role in heart disease. It may improve the function of the endothelium and is a potent anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant.

Turmeric contains bioactive compounds with powerful medicinal properties. Curcumin is a natural anti-inflammatory compound. Turmeric dramatically increases the antioxidant capacity of the body. Curcumin boosts brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), linked to improved brain function and a lower risk of brain diseases.

rosemary-2

Rosemary, is a woody, perennial herb with fragrant, evergreen, needle-like leaves and white, pink, purple, or blue flowers, native to the Mediterranean region.

The herb has been hailed since ancient times for its medicinal properties. Rosemary was traditionally used to help alleviate muscle pain, improve memory, boost the immune and circulatory system, and promote hair growth.

Rosemary has many health benefits, which may include boosting memory, improving mood, and lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s and cancer. It also helps to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and protect the immune system. The rosemary herb can help stimulate circulation, detoxify the body and protect it from bacterial infections, delay aging, and heal many skin conditions.

Rosemary has a warm, bitter, and astringent taste yet it gives a wonderful flavor and aroma to soups, sauces, stews, roasts, and stuffing. It can be used in dried powder form or as fresh leaves for preparing tea, essential oil, and liquid extract.

The phytonutrients in Rosemary include rosmarinic acid, arnosol and carnosic acid, which support your body’s cellular health.

Rosemary Nutricert Certified Farm - Morocco

Rosemary is also a good source of iron, calcium and vitamin B6. In addition, those spiky green leaves contain phytonutrients, naturally occurring compounds found in plants that help them survive the elements. These phytonutrients are thought to provide similar benefits for people.

Rosemary contains substances that are useful for stimulating the immune system, increasing circulation, and improving digestion. Rosemary also contains anti-inflammatory compounds that may make it useful for reducing the severity of asthma attacks. In addition, rosemary has been shown to increase the blood flow to the head and brain, improving concentration.

Rosemary grows on a small evergreen shrub belonging to the Labiatae family that is related to mint. Its leaves look like flat pine-tree needles, deep green in color on top while silver-white on their underside.

The rosemary herb is considered to be sacred by ancient Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, as well as Hebrews and is particularly prevalent in Italian cultural cuisine. It is also called as ‘Dew of the Sea’ or ‘Old man’.

Rosemary-Blog-The-Pickled-Beet-Personal-Chef-Miami-1080x627

According to USDA, fresh rosemary has a very high reserve of vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, thiamin, and folate. It contains minerals like magnesium, calcium, and iron. Moreover, it has abundant antioxidants in the form of phenolic compounds like diterpene, carnosol, and rosmarinic acid.

The essential oils in rosemary herb also contain powerful ingredients such as cineol, camphene, borneol, bornyl acetate, α-terpineol, and α-pinene.

Rosemary has traditionally been used as a natural remedy for upset stomach, constipation, gas, bloating as it helps in relaxing the muscles of the intestine. Adding it to your diet may help you regulate your bowel movements and your gastrointestinal system.

Carnosol and carnosic acids are two powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds found in rosemary that have been linked to reducing inflammation of muscles, blood vessels, and joints. This makes it an effective treatment and prevention of many diseases, including blood pressure, gout, arthritis, and injuries sustained during physical exertion or surgery.

Enhances Brain Function:

Brain Picture

One of the earliest documented uses of rosemary was as a cognitive stimulant.
It helped improve memory performance and quality. It is also known to boost alertness, intelligence, and focus. One possible mechanism for this action is that rosemary extract enhances the synthesis of nerve growth factor which is vital for nerve tissue.

rosemary_brain

The carnosic acid in rosemary has neuroprotective properties. Studies suggests that it may help to reduce oxidative stress and overstimulation in nerve cells, ultimately protecting the nervous system. There is also evidence showing that rosemary protects certain parts of the brain from tissue damage such as ischemic injury, heals nervous tissue, and reduces blood clots.

Studies have proven that Rosemary may improve Brain Function. In ancient Greece and Rome, rosemary was thought to strengthen memory. Research indicates that inhaling rosemary oil helps prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a brain chemical important for thinking, concentration and memory.

brain rosemary

Rosemary contains an ingredient called carnosic acid, which can fight off damage by free radicals in the brain. Rosemary appears to be protective against brain damage, might improve recovery and prevent brain aging. Some studies have suggested that rosemary may significantly help prevent brain aging.

quercetin-red-onion-1170x500

What is Quercetin?

Flavonoids are present in vegetables, fruits, grains, tea, and wine.

The beneficial effects of flavonoids like quercetin come from their ability to function as antioxidants inside your body. Free radicals are unstable molecules that may cause cellular damage when their levels become too high.

Quercetin, a flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables, has unique biological properties that may improve mental/physical performance and reduce infection risk. These properties form the basis for potential benefits to overall health and disease resistance.

Quercetin is categorized as a flavonol, one of the six subclasses of flavonoid compounds. The name has been used since 1857, and is derived from quercetum (oak forest), after Quercus. It is a naturally occurring polar auxin transport inhibitor.

Quercetin is a chemical found naturally in a number of foods including apples, onions, teas, berries, and red wine. This flavonoid is also found in some herbs such as ginkgo biloba and St. John’s wort.

Quercetin acts as an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals—the chemical by-products that harm cell membranes and damage DNA. Available as a dietary supplement, quercetin also possesses antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties.

Blackboard with the chemical formula of Quercetin

Quercetin is used for treating conditions of the heart and blood vessels including “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis), high cholesterol, heart disease, and circulation problems. It is also used for diabetes, cataracts, hay fever, peptic ulcer, schizophrenia, inflammation, asthma, gout, viral infections, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), preventing cancer, and for treating chronic infections of the prostate. Quercetin is also used to increase endurance and improve athletic performance.

Quercetin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects which might help reduce prostate inflammation.

The antioxidant quercetin is sometimes called the “master flavonoid.” Allegedly people say it’s one of the best natural antihistamines.

Most people have heard of flavonoids, plant-based antioxidant pigments that are being celebrated for many alleged health benefits. Flavonoids give plants their color and belong to the class of polyphenols. Polyphenols have become a hot topic recently with some studies suggesting their benefits in preventing heart disease, cancer, and other chronic diseases.

lycopene-foods

Lycopene is a carotenoid − a natural pigment that gives some vegetables and fruits their red color. It is an antioxidant (a substance that protects against cell damage). Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the US diet.

Lycopene is a plant nutrient with antioxidant properties. It’s the pigment that gives red and pink fruits, such as tomatoes, watermelons and pink grapefruit, their characteristic color.
Lycopene has been linked to health benefits ranging from heart health to protection against sunburns and certain types of cancers.

Lycopene is an antioxidant in the carotenoid family. Antioxidants protect your body from damage caused by compounds known as free radicals. When free radical levels outnumber antioxidant levels, they can create oxidative stress in your body. This stress is linked to certain chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Research shows that lycopene’s antioxidant properties can help keep free radical levels in balance, protecting your body against some of these conditions.

Lycopene is a strong antioxidant that can protect your body against oxidative stress and offer some protection from certain environmental toxins and chronic diseases.

Lycopene’s strong antioxidant action may prevent or slow down the progression of some types of cancer. For instance, some studies show that the nutrient may slow down the growth of breast and prostate cancers by limiting tumor growth. Certain observational studies link high intakes of carotenoids, including lycopene, to a lower risk of lung and prostate cancers.

Lycopene is a chemical molecular formula. tomato. Vector illustration on isolated background.

Lycopene Chemical Molecular Formula

Diets rich in the antioxidant lycopene may help prevent the development of prostate cancer. It may also protect against cancers of the lungs, breasts and kidneys, but more human-based research is needed to confirm this. Lycopene’s strong antioxidant properties may help improve cholesterol levels and reduce your likelihood of developing or dying prematurely from heart disease.

Lycopene, a naturally occurring red carotenoid pigment found in tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon, papaya, guava, and other fruits, has been extensively studied for more than 70 years, with more than 2000 articles published in peer-reviewed journals and 4000 other publications (scientific and otherwise) written on the subject. Most of these articles have focused on lycopene derived from tomatoes.

lycopene 1

Most red and pink foods contain some lycopene. Tomatoes and foods made with tomatoes are the richest sources of this nutrient. Other foods that contain lycopene are Sun-dried tomato, tomato purée, guava, watermelon, fresh tomatoes, canned tomato, papaya, pink grapefruit, cooked sweet red peppers, apricots and pink guavas.

This carotenoid is believed to have strong antioxidant powers, with some studies showing a reduced risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and macular degeneration.

Lycopene is not produced in the body, so you only obtain its benefits by eating foods rich in lycopene or supplementing.

There is currently no recommended daily intake for lycopene. However, from the current studies, intakes between 8–21 mg per day appear to be most beneficial.

What is Magnesium?

Magnesium is the one of the most abundant mineral in the human body.
It plays several important roles in the health of your body and brain. Magnesium is an essential ion to the human body, playing an instrumental role in supporting and sustaining health and life.

One of magnesium’s main roles is acting as a cofactor or helper molecule in the biochemical reactions continuously performed by enzymes.
In fact magnesium is involved in hundreds of reactions in your body, including:

1.Energy creation: magnesium helps convert food into energy.

2. Protein formation: magnesium helps create new proteins from amino acids.

3.Gene maintenance: magnesium helps create and repair DNA and RNA.

4.Nervous system regulation: magnesium helps regulate neurotransmitters, which send messages throughout your brain and nervous system.

molybdenum-3

What is Molybdenum?

Molybdenum is an essential mineral found in high concentrations in legumes, grains and organ meats. It activates enzymes that help break down harmful sulfites and prevent toxins from building up in the body.

Molybdenum is an essential mineral needed by the body in very small amounts. Though your body only needs tiny amounts, it’s a key component of many vital functions. Without it, deadly sulfites and toxins would build up in your body.

Molybdenum is an essential mineral in the body, just like iron and magnesium.
It is present in soil and transferred into your diet when you consume plants, as well as animals that feed on those plants. Although amounts vary, the richest sources of this essential mineral are usually beans, lentils, grains and organ meats, particularly liver and kidney.

One reason Molybdenum is an essential mineral is because it acts as a co-factor for important enzymes. Molybdenum is vital for many processes in your body.
Once you eat it, it is absorbed into your blood from your stomach and gut, then carried to your liver, kidneys and other areas.

Some of this mineral is stored in the liver and kidneys, but most of it is converted into a molybdenum cofactor. Any excess molybdenum is then passed in urine. The molybdenum cofactor activates four essential enzymes.

Enzymes are biological molecules that drive chemical reactions in the body. The four enzymes associated with Molybdenum include: 1.) Sulfite oxidase 2.) Aldehyde oxidase 3.) Xanthine oxidase 4.) Mitochondrial amidoxime reducing component (mARC).

molybdenum_6

Molybdenum’s role in breaking down sulfites is especially important in it’s role as a cofactor for the four enzymes listed above. These enzymes are involved in processing sulfites and breaking down waste products and toxins in the body.

Foods Sources of Molybdenum:

molybdenum foods 2

We receive molybdenum mostly from the food that we consume. Normally, a regular diet that consists of whole grains, legumes, leafy green vegetables, and nuts may make-up for the body’s requirement of molybdenum. Legumes such as peas and lentils are rich sources of molybdenum. Kidney beans, navy beans, and lima beans, almonds, cashews, chestnuts, and peanuts, soy milk, soybeans, and tofu, dairy products, especially cheese and yogurt, leafy vegetables, eggs, whole grains, liver and tomatoes are also sources of this essential mineral.

The body requires molybdenum for a set of diverse functions such as in the active functioning of certain enzymes (molybdenum-dependent enzymes) that are very important for human health. Apart from this, molybdenum is involved in other processes such as cell energy production, proper development of the nervous system, and processing of wastes.

According to the US National Academy of Sciences, Food and Nutrition Board, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of molybdenum for adults (both men and women) is 45 micrograms per day. The kidneys and the liver are the sites for molybdenum storage in the body.

folate asparagus

Folate (Vitamin B9) is one of the B-vitamins and is needed to make red and white blood cells in the bone marrow, convert carbohydrates into energy, and produce DNA and RNA. Adequate folate intake is extremely important during periods of rapid growth such as pregnancy, infancy, and adolescence.

Folate (vitamin B9) is important in red blood cell formation and for healthy cell growth and function. The nutrient is crucial during early pregnancy to reduce the risk of birth defects of the brain and spine.

Folate is found mainly in dark green leafy vegetables, beans, peas and nuts. Fruits rich in folate include oranges, lemons, bananas, melons and strawberries. The synthetic form of folate is folic acid. It’s in an essential component of prenatal vitamins and is in many fortified foods such as cereals and pastas.

A diet lacking foods rich in folate or folic acid can lead to a folate deficiency. Folate deficiency can also occur in people who have conditions, such as celiac disease, that prevent the small intestine from absorbing nutrients from foods (malabsorption syndromes).

folic acid Kale

Kale

Folate,” also known as “folacin” and  “vitamin B9” is a water-soluble B vitamin that is naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement.

Folate (Vitamin B9) functions as a coenzyme or co-substrate in single-carbon transfers in the synthesis of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and metabolism of amino acids which is a very important bodily process.

Food Sources of Folate (Vitamin B9):

folate foods 1

Folate (Vitamin B9) is naturally present in a wide variety of foods, including vegetables (especially dark green leafy vegetables), fruits and fruit juices, nuts, beans, peas, seafood, eggs, dairy products, meat, poultry, and grains. Spinach, liver, asparagus, and brussels sprouts are among the foods with the highest folate levels.

The recommended daily amount of folate for adults is 400 micrograms (mcg). Adult women who are planning pregnancy or could become pregnant should be advised to get 400 to 800 mcg of folic acid a day.

vitaminB3 Niacin

Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, is an important nutrient. In fact, every part of your body needs it to function properly. Niacin may help lower cholesterol, ease arthritis and boost brain function, among other benefits.

Niacin( Vitamin B3) is one of eight water-soluble B vitamins. It’s also known as nicotinic acid, niacinamide and nicotinamide.

Your body gets niacin through food but also makes small amounts from the amino acid tryptophan. During biosynthesis the liver can synthesize niacin from the essential amino acid tryptophan, requiring 60 mg of tryptophan to make 1 mg of niacin. Riboflavin (vitamin B6) and iron are required for the process.

As with all B vitamins, niacin helps convert food into energy by aiding enzymes. Niacin is an essential vitamin involved in cellular metabolism. Niacin plays a role in cell signaling and making and repairing DNA, in addition to acting as an antioxidant.

Niacin (Vitamin B3) deficiency is characterized by skin problems, dementia and diarrhea.

Health Benefits of Niacin include:

Niacin (Vitamin B3) has been used since the 1950s to treat high cholesterol. Niacin may help Prevent Heart Disease, may help Treat Type 1 Diabetes, may Boost Brain Function, may improve Skin Function and may Reduce Symptoms of Arthritis. Niacin can help treat many conditions. Most notably, it helps raise “good” HDL cholesterol levels while lowering “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.

Niacin is a B vitamin that’s made and used by your body to turn food into energy. It helps keep your nervous system, digestive system and skin healthy.

Niacin (vitamin B3) is often part of a daily multivitamin, but most people get enough niacin from the food they eat. Foods rich in niacin include yeast, milk, meat, tortillas and cereal grains. Liver is one of the best natural sources of niacin. Chicken Breast, especially the breast meat, is a good source of both niacin  and lean protein. Tuna, Turkey, Salmon, Anchovies, Pork, Ground Beef.

Fruits high in Niacin (Vitamin B3) include avocados, mangoes, passion fruit, guavas, nectarines, and bananas. These fruits contain at least 1 mg of niacin per serving. Also, there is a range of vegetables that are high in niacin. Some of them are potatoes, peas, lentils, green peas, asparagus, tomatoes, and acorn squash.

The recommended amount of niacin depends on your age and gender. Men need 16 mg per day, while most women need 14 mg per day.

Top-10-Dietary-Sources-Of-Selenium-–-A-Trace-Element

Selenium is an essential mineral, meaning it must be obtained through your diet. Selenium is only needed in small amounts but plays a major role in important processes in your body, including your metabolism and thyroid function.

Your body relies on selenium, an important mineral, for many of its basic functions, from reproduction to fighting infection.

You can find the essential mineral Selenium in foods like it in garlic, broccoli, sardines, tuna, brazil nuts and barley, among other foods.

Selenium plays an important role in the health of your immune system. This antioxidant helps lower oxidative stress in your body, which reduces inflammation and enhances immunity. Studies have demonstrated that increased blood levels of selenium are associated with enhanced immune response.

Importance of selenium for brain function?

In molecular biology a selenoprotein is any protein that includes a selenocysteine amino acid residue. Selenocysteine is the 21st proteinogenic amino acid. Selenocysteine exists naturally in all three domains of life, but not in every lineage, as a building block of selenoproteins.

Brain Picture

Through selenoproteins selenium is involved into the diverse functions of the brain including motor performance, coordination, memory and cognition. A diverse relation of selenium and selenoproteins to the brain metabolism and function may point to their direct involvement into the brain signalling pathways. Selenoproteins seem to be of special importance to the neuronal cells, which utilise γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) as their signaling molecule (GABAergic neurons).

Foods Rich in Selenium include:
Brazil nuts, Fish, Ham, Enriched foods, Pork, Beef, Turkey, Chicken, Cottage cheese, Eggs, Brown rice, Sunflower seeds, Baked beans, Mushrooms, Oatmeal, Spinach, Milk and yogurt, Lentils, Cashews and Bananas.

Science-Based Health Benefits of Selenium include:
Selenium acts as a powerful antioxidant, may reduce your risk of certain cancers, may protect against heart disease, helps prevent mental decline, is important for thyroid health, boosts your immune system and may help reduce asthma symptoms.

Recommended daily amount of Selenium:

  • 9 to 13 years of age 40 mcg
  • Over 14 years 55 mcg
