“Slight Edge Performance Program”: Alarming Vitamin D Deficiencies in NFL Football Players

According to a study presented at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine 2011 Annual Meeting, vitamin D deficiency might be unusually high among American football players, with black players and players who have suffered muscle injuries showing significantly lower vitamin D levels.

According to the study, researchers tested the vitamin D levels of 89 professional football players from the New York Giants National Football League (NFL) team in the spring of 2010 and found that 27 players (30.3%) had deficient vitamin D levels (below 20 ng/mL). As many as 45 players (50.6%) had levels consistent with vitamin D insufficiency (between 20 and 31.9 ng/mL). Only 17 players (19.1%) had values within normal limits (above 32 ng/mL).

Lead author Michael K. Shindle, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon from Summit Medical Group, in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey said, “We found that an alarming percentage of players — 80.9% — had abnormal vitamin D levels of less than 32 ng/mL.”

Dr. Michael K. Shindle added that all players sustaining injuries that caused them to miss at least 1 practice or game had vitamin D levels that were significantly lower than players without muscle injury.

The study done with the NFL’s New York Giants consisted of 31 white players and 58 black players. Blacks tend to have lower vitamin D levels than whites in the general population. “Up to 93% of African American players had abnormal vitamin D levels, compared with 31% of white players,” Dr. Shindle said.

What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is an essential vitamin required by the body for the proper absorption of calcium, bone development, control of cell growth, neuromuscular functioning, proper immune functioning, and alleviation of inflammation.

Why is Vitamin D important for good health and athletic performance?
Dr. Shindle says, “It’s also been shown that vitamin D can increase the number of type II, or fast twitch, muscle fibers.” This is very important for athletes who want to get faster and increase their speed.

According to a 2009 study published in “Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise,” maintaining proper levels of vitamin D helps your body to properly use calcium, a mineral required for proper functioning of your muscles, including fast twitch muscle fibers. Consuming vitamin D can increase the number of fast twitch muscle fibers within your muscle tissue, as well as increase the size of these fibers. Overall, this translates to an increase in athletic performance.

Inadequate levels of vitamin D can lead to a weakened immune system, increased cancer risk, poor hair growth, and osteomalacia, a condition of weakened muscles and bones.

Other Benefits of vitamin D?
•It is crucial for the absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorous which help support and maintain healthy bones.
•It is an immune system regulator.
•It may be an important way to arm the immune system against disorders like the common cold.

What is the best way to get vitamin D?
Vitamin D for humans is obtained from sun exposure, food and supplements. Sunlight promotes sufficient vitamin D synthesis in the skin. Foods that contain vitamin D include fish oils, fatty fish, beef liver, cheese, egg yolks, and certain mushrooms.

Personally I have been taking a plant based food supplement called NUTRILITE® DOUBLE X® since my college football days at Virginia State University. I noticed how I had more energy to train harder and workout longer. I also found that my body was recovering faster from workouts and competition. My friend Amanda is a former college soccer player and in 2008 she recommended that I use it to fill all my nutrition gaps. She said Double X was the best and in my personal opinion she was telling the truth! NUTRILITE® is the world’s leading brand of vitamin, mineral, and dietary supplements. It’s formulated by NUTRILITE, the only global vitamin and mineral brand to grow, harvest, and process plants on their own certified organic farms.**

When you compare NUTRILITE DOUBLE X® to Centrum® and GNC Solotron®, there’s really no comparison! Double X contains more of almost every vitamin and mineral, plus many more plant concentrates, which provide superb antioxidant protection.

Why do I need a supplement?
The American Medical Association recommends that all adults take one multivitamin daily. This is true even if you already eat a diet rich in fresh, whole, natural foods, because the foods you consume often don’t supply all the vitamins and minerals you need, at the recommended levels. If you’re going to supplement, why not start with the world’s best multi? NUTRILITE® DOUBLE X® Vitamin/Mineral/Phytonutrient.

World-class Olympic sprinter and former world’s fastest man Asafa Powell is the perfect example of an elite athlete who plant based supplementation made a tremendous difference for and the reason for that is he was now provided with the nutrients he needed to operate at maximum efficiency.

Asafa Powell broke the world record for the 100-meter sprint in June 2005, three months after adding NUTRILITE™ DOUBLE X™ to his training regimen.

In 2005, the then 22-year-old Asafa Powell broke the men’s 100-meter world record at a meet in Athens, Greece becoming the world Record holder in the 100-meter sprint — just three months after his brother introduced him to NUTRILITE DOUBLE X. Asafa’s brother Donovan, who also was a world-class sprinter, was introduced to the NUTRILITE brand by his wife’s parents. Appreciating the benefits he received from DOUBLE X, Donovan supplied the multivitamin to his younger brother when he complained of low energy levels during his training early in 2005.

“Taking DOUBLE X was the only change I made to how I had been training,” says Asafa. “After I started taking it, I felt I had more energy to train harder and run faster. I am very careful about what I consume so I appreciate the balanced vitamin and mineral content plus the rich, all-natural plant concentrates in DOUBLE X.”

The world class runner said: “When I run, I don’t think about anyone else. I don’t think about my competition, I just do what I have to do. Nutrilite is a lot like me that way, because they don’t consider the competition in what they do, they just focus on being the best in their field,” he says. “I am confident that DOUBLE X and NUTRILITE will help me power up for the competitions yet to come.”

“Slight Edge Performance Program” ACL Recovery: Nutrition for Healing Ligaments

Slight Edge Performance Program”
ACL Recovery: Nutrition for Healing Ligaments

An MRI on Wednesday February 13, 2013 revealed that Kentucky center Nerlens Noel has torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The star player was expected to be the NBA’s No. 1 overall selection in the upcoming draft.

New York Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury to his right knee during pre-season practice in July 2012. Thomas, who signed a four-year $28.4 million deal in March, spent the entire 2011 season on injured reserve. Thomas also tore the ACL in his right knee in 2005 while at USC.

The NBA had four ACL blowouts last season (2011′-2012′) including Chicago’a Derrick Rose, New York’s Iman Shumpert, Minnesota’s Ricky Rubio and Oklahoma City’s Eric Maynor.

Leandro Barbosa a guard for the Boston Celtics fell to a torn ACL on Feb 12, 2013. Lou Williams Guard for the Atlanta Hawks suffered a Torn right knee ligament Jan 18, 2013. Rajon Rondo Point Guard for the Boston Celtics tore his right ACL on Jan 27, 2013.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III had January 9th, 2013 to repair two torn ligaments in his right knee. The two-hour procedure was meant to repair Griffin’s torn lateral cruciate ligament or LCL – a band of fibrous tissue that connects the thigh bone to the outer bone of the lower leg – as well as his anterior cruciate ligament or ACL, which he tore initially in 2009. The new ACL injury occurred in grafted tissue used to treat the 2009 tear.

South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore, who tore an ACL in 2011 and battled all the way back, suffered an injury that looked as ugly as any we’ve ever seen playing against University of Tennessee in October 27th 2013.

An ACL injury is the tearing of the anterior cruciate (KROO-she-ate) ligament, or ACL, inside your knee joint. An ACL injury most commonly occurs during sports that involve sudden stops and changes in direction — such as football, basketball, soccer, tennis and volleyball. Depending on the severity of your ACL injury, treatment may include surgery to replace the torn ligament followed by rehabilitation exercises to help you regain strength and stability.

With so many ACL and ligament injuries happening in sports today there is a great need for information and education about how to help prevent this terrible injury. We also need information and education concerning how to recover quicker and stronger from an ACL or ligament injury.

Torn or pulled ligaments can be frustrating and slow to heal especially for athletes. Good nutrition can help quicken the recovery period and help strengthen injured ligaments.

Ligaments are cable like structures that hold your bones together. Without them you would not be able to move without falling apart. A strained or torn ligament actually involves millions of tiny tears of the collagen and that makes up the ligament. Vitamins can help with ligament repair. According to http://www.dynamicchiropractic.com the peak time for collagen synthesis to occur for healing is five to seven days after the injury. Therefore it is critical to introduce proper foods and vitamins and minerals doing that time. After the seventh day the potential for collagen to repair itself is dramatically reduced.

VITAMIN C
http://www.dynamicchiropractic.com suggests that vitamin C and a handful of B vitamins should be included in the healing process. Vitamin C has been shown in many studies to be a powerful anti-inflammatory nutrient especially when combined with proteolyptic enzymes. The combination is even more effective than many drugs used for the same purpose. The body recognizes drugs as poison and has a difficult time metabolizing them, but Vitamin C is natural and easily absorbed into the system. Vitamin C and iron are both essential amino acids necessary for the synthesis of collagen.
Click HERE to read about NUTRILITE Vitamin C Plus Extended Release. See how you can get 833% of the daily value of Vitamin C and other Nutrients in DOUBLE X Vitamin/Mineral/Phytonutrient

B VITAMINS
B-6 is involved in protein synthesis which is especially crucial after a ligament injury. B-12 is a macronutrient found in RNA and DNA. B-12 is critical because a deficiency can cause a slow down in collagen production. B-2 is another vitamin to consider taking since it, along with copper takes part in strengthening new collagen.
Vitamin B-12 is also important for energy! Click HERE and read about XS ENERGY!

MULTIVITAMIN
It’s a great idea to take a multivitamin as a daily routine, but the practice becomes even more critical when healing from a sprained or torn ligament. Generally the body begins healing three days post injury. It is at this point the body will be demanding nutrients, vitamins and minerals to repair the damage done to this remarkable biological machine known as the human body. A daily multivitamin provides the raw material for recovering from ligament damage with a broad range of nutrients, each contributing to the healing process to some extent.

“Slight Edge Performance Program” Injury Prevention and Athletic Performance

Today, more than 95% of all chronic disease is caused by food choice, toxic food ingredients, nutritional deficiencies and lack of physical exercise.” ~Mike Adams

Personal achievements are realized when athletes combine disciplined training, proper nutrition and daily supplements. Energy, Strength, Hydration, Recovery and Daily nutrition needs are important for athletes to get the most out of their training and to help them reach their personal goals.
In 2005 Jamaican Olympic Sprinter Asafa Powell Became the World’s Fastest man! Check out his Story HERE

Let’s look at a an example. Two high school Football All-Americans are training and preparing for their opportunity to compete and excel at the college level. Both wake up early in the morning before school and get a 45 min workout in. Then after school they do weight training with their team. Also 2 days a week they both have a personal strength and conditioning coach that teaches them speed, agility, power, flexibility and strength. Here’s where the big difference is…. PLAYER 1 takes a NSF Certified for Sport, Plant-Based multi vitamin and PLAYER 2 does not. The reason why PLAYER 1 takes a daily multivitamin is because he learned from his coach that there is a higher energy requirement for Athletes and that we often don’t consume enough of the protective phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals that help to Strengthen our physical performance, prevent sickness, injury and Quicken and Strengthen our Recovery Process.

Is your diet giving you all the vitamins and minerals you need for optimal health?

How healthy is your diet?

When the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans were released in 2005, the federal recommendations for fruits and vegetables increased from 5-9 servings to 5-13 servings per day for adults. Unfortunately, despite known health benefits of higher intakes of fruits and vegetables, very few Americans are consuming these recommended intake levels. Given that fruit and vegetable intakes are suboptimal for most people, it is reasonable to conclude that intake of the phytonutrients typically provided in these foods is less than optimal, too. Essentially, there is a “phytonutrient gap” among the majority of Americans.

“Slight Edge Performance Program”: Injury Prevention and Athletic Performance

The way you think, the way you behave, the way you eat, can influence your life by 30 to 50 years.” ~Deepak Chopra

Optimal performance requires optimal nutrition. Whether on the field or in daily life, optimal performance requires optimal nutrition.

How Nutrients Work

Nutrients from food are absorbed by the body as it passes through the digestive system:

Nutrients are essential for cell growth, maintenance and repair.
Nutrients provide energy to enable your body to function efficiently.
Nutrients, along with fiber and water, are essential to your good health.
Although nutrients can work alone, each depends upon the others to be the most effective. The main nutrients are the macronutrients, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats – and the micronutrients, vitamins and minerals.

What Macronutrients Do?
Macronutrients Are Essential for Good Health:

They assist in breaking down carbohydrates and fats, which provide energy to the body.
They assist in the absorption of protein, which provides the building blocks necessary for cell growth and repair.

What Micronutrients Do?

Vitamins and minerals do not in themselves provide energy, but macronutrients depend on them to regulate the release of energy from food.

Vitamins are organic substances.
They activate enzymes, which are proteins that act as catalysts to speed up biological reactions that take place in your body.
Your body produces a certain amount of vitamins D and K, but all other vitamins come from your diet or supplementation.

Minerals are inorganic substances that originate from rocks and ores and enter the food chain through the soil.

We get minerals either by eating plants grown on mineral-rich soil or by eating animals that have fed on these plants.
Calcium, magnesium and phosphorus are the major constituents of bone.
Sodium and potassium control your body’s water balance.
Other minerals (chromium, iron, and magnesium) are needed for various chemical processes to take place in the body.

Omega Fatty Acids help to Support memory, learning and concentration; also helps your nerves send messages more efficiently. NUTRILITE OCEAN ESSENTIALS Balanced Health can Help you! Learn More HERE

“Slight Edge Performance Program” Injury Prevention and Athletic Performance

Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.” ~John F. Kennedy

Today You’ll Learn and Understand why the Nutrients from Plants can help you Prevent Injury and Sickness and Help Increase Your Athletic and Physical Performance.

How Can I Increase my Physical Energy and what Nutrients help with Energy Production? ENERGY

Thiamin also known as Vitamin (B1) is a water-soluble vitamin of the B complex. Water-soluble means it can dissolve in water. We need vitamin B1 so that our body can use carbohydrates as energy – it is essential for glucose metabolism. Vitamin B1 also plays a key role in nerve, muscle and heart function. Thiamine is a co-enzyme – it helps some enzymes work properly. Vitamin B1 is found in high concentrations in the outer layers and germ of cereals, as well as in yeast, beef, pork, nuts, wholegrains, and pulses. ENERGY

What other Nutrients can help me with Energy?

Riboflavin also known as Vitamin (B2) is for Energy Production and and Healthy Nerve Function. It plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s energy supply. Vitamin B2 is crucial for breaking down food components, absorbing other nutrients, and maintaining tissue. Riboflavin helps convert carbohydrates into ATP (adenosine triphosphate). The human body produces ATP from food, ATP produces energy as the body requires it. The compound ATP is vital for storing energy in muscles. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) is also important for Healthy eyes, nerves, muscles and skin and Preventing the development of cataracts.

Food Sources for Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) include:Asparagus, Artichokes, Spinach, Sweet potatoes, Kale, Peas, Nuts, Energy Drinks (XS Energy), Whole-grain breads, Broccoli and more.ENERGY

Vitamins and minerals do not in themselves provide energy, but macronutrients depend on them to regulate the release of energy from food.

How Can I Get More of these Important Vitamins, Minerals and Phytonutrients in my diet?

If You’re serious about Increasing your Ability to perform athletically, Prevent Injury and sickness and Quicken and strengthen Recovery Process you must give your Body the Fuel it needs! Think of Your Body like a car. Without the right fuel your level of performance is threatened.FUEL

Because we don’t often get to consume enough of these protective Vitamins, Minerals and Phytonutrients through diet alone it is Vital that we take supplements. These supplements should be Plant Based and organic with no synthetics or artificial chemicals.

“Slight Edge Performance Program” injury Prevention and Sports Performance Tip

Time And health are two precious assets that we don’t recognize and appreciate until they have been depleted.” ~Denis Waitley

Today We Learn about the BENEFITS of the Vitamin E, the Mineral Magnesium and the Phytonutrient Chlorophyll.

Athletes need to get adequate amounts of vitamin E. Nutritional elements like vitamin E are often most found in fresh fruits and vegetables. Foods Rich in Vitamin E include: Mustard Greens, Swiss Chard, Spinach, Kale, Collard Greens, Nuts Tropical Fruits, Red Peppers, Broccoli, Oils and Wheats. The body’s own metabolism creates free radicals during excessive aerobic exercise. Vitamin E reserves make sure these free radicals don’t get out of hand and cause trouble. The majority of vitamin E’s benefits stem from its antioxidant qualities. That means it combines with oxygen and destroys free radicals. It protects polyunsaturated fats and other oxygen-sensitive compounds such as vitamin A from being destroyed by damaging oxidation reactions. Vitamin E’s antioxidant properties are also important to cell membranes. For example, vitamin E protects lung cells that are in constant contact with oxygen and white blood cells that help fight disease. As an antioxidant with a powerful punch, vitamin E helps prevent cancer, heart disease, strokes, cataracts, and possibly some of the signs of aging.
Vitamin E protects artery walls and keeps the “bad” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol from being oxidized. Oxidation of LDL cholesterol marks the beginning of clogged arteries. Vitamin E also keeps the blood thin by preventing blood platelets from clumping together. High levels of vitamin E in the body decrease the risk of a non-fatal heart attack or stroke in most people. A dynamic cancer fighter, vitamin E protects cells and DNA from damage that can turn cancerous. It reduces the growth of tumors while enhancing immune function and preventing precancerous substances from being turned into carcinogens. Vitamin E can be beneficial to people with diabetes. It enhances the action of insulin and improves blood glucose metabolism by reducing oxidative stress. The health benefits of vitamin E come from its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants remove free radicals — the unstable compounds that damage the cell structure. Immunity levels improve when vitamin E is consumed. Another important benefit of vitamin E is that it reduces cholesterol and the risk of developing cancer.

Leading health authorities tell us we need to eat from 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. But who really does eat this much? Click HERE to Learn about NUTRILITE Concentrated Fruits & Vegetables can help. It captures crucial phytonutrients from natural fruits, vegetables, and plants – enough to equal the amount found in 10+ servings – in just 2 easy-to-swallow tablets.

Magnesium is a mineral that’s crucial to the body’s function. Foods Rich in Magnesium Include: Peanut butter, rice, Wheat, oat Bran, Squash, dried herbs, almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds and cocoa powder. A deficiency in magnesium can lead to muscle spasms, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety disorders, migraines, osteoporosis, and cerebral infarction. Major Benefits include stronger bones and Muscle Function. Magnesium is also a major cofactor in Energy Metabolism and aids in regulating a Healthy Heartbeat. Magnesium helps keep blood pressure normal, bones strong, and the heart rhythm steady. Experts say that many people in the U.S. aren’t eating enough foods with magnesium. This mild magnesium deficiency could put them at risk for a number of diseases. According to a 1999-2000 NHANES study (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey), 68% of Americans consumed less than the U.S. recommended daily allowance for magnesium. Studies showed that 45% consumed less than 75% of the recommended amount, and 19% consumed less than 50%. Adults who consumed less than the recommended amount of magnesium were about 1.5 times more likely to have elevated inflammation markers than adults who consumed the recommended amount. Magnesium is an essential mineral for staying healthy and is required for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Multiple health benefits of magnesium include transmission of nerve impulses, body temperature regulation, detoxification, energy production, and the formation of healthy bones and teeth. Health specialists have always emphasized the importance of including adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals in our daily diet. Zinc, calcium, and magnesium are three of the most important minerals essential for good health. Magnesium aids in the absorption of calcium by the body, while zinc actively supports the body’s immune system.

Chlorophyll is a major Phytonutrient found in mostly green foods. benefits in our body heals, cleanses, and destroys many harmful pathogenic bacteria, fungus, and cancer cells. Foods Rich in Chlorophyll are Broccoli, Alfalfa, Tomato, Apples, Carrot, Spinach, Bananas, Garlic and Green Tea Leaves. Chlorophyll is as important as sunlight, without it life would not be possible. Hemoglobin is the iron-containing substance that provides red blood cells their red pigment and transports oxygen to the body tissues. In fact, we may not realize that our blood is composed of 75% of hemoglobin. As we digest green food, the magnesium helps in rebuilding and replenishing the red blood cells which is responsible for boosting our energy. Refined, low fiber and and animal fats contribute to major diseases start in the colon. Gastrointestinal problems can be best treated by improving the digestion and assimilation. Among those natural nutrients that heal the intestinal track, green vegetables high in chlorophyll content aid in loosening and cleansing the colon. This is to clarify that chlorophyll is not considered as essential nutrient. Nevertheless, people are lacking of green foods in their daily diet are lacking of enough chlorophyll, and therefore advised to add chlorophyll in their diet. We get our food from plants and the chlorophyll benefits within the plant. Even if you eat animals, most of the animals some people eat get their food from plants. But were to plants get their food?
The 2 key components plants get their food from are Healthy Soil and Sunlight.

Phytonutrients literally means plant (phyto) substance needed for good health (nutrients). Phytonutrients are the natural nutrients found in plants, such as lycopene from tomatoes, resveratrol from grapes, and Lutein from spinach leaves. We often don’t consume enough of these protective phytonutrients through diet alone, which is why it’s important to take supplements, such as DoubleX to fill in the gaps!

“Slight Edge Performance Program” Vitamin D Health Benefits

Mainstream medicine would be way different if they focused on prevention even half as much as they focused on intervention…” ~Anonymous

Vitamin D deficiency is common in athletes. Correcting the deficiency by taking a Vitamin D supplement can produce significant musculoskeletal sports health benefits. Here are Vitamin D Effects on sports health & athletic performance. Vitamin D affects:
muscle protein synthesis, muscle strength, muscle size, reaction time, balance, coordination, endurance
inflammation; and immunity. Vitamin D deficiency produces: muscle fiber atrophy, slow peak muscle contraction, prolonged time to muscle relaxation, and increased risk of chronic musculoskeletal pain.
Type II, fast-twitch muscles fibers, extremely important in many of the burst activities necessary for peak athletic performance and fall avoidance, are particularly sensitive to the effects of Vitamin D deficiency. There is no known threshold for optimal sports health benefits of vitamin D, but studies show many elite athletes are vitamin D deficient, with incidences of vitamin D deficiency in:
basketball players (up to 94%)
gymnasts (83%)
football players (81%)
Because seasonal variations are expected (athletes have higher levels in the summer, when they are getting vitamin D from exposure to the sun), so current recommendations are for testing athletes in early autumn.

Vitamin D is found in many food sources, such as fish, eggs, fortified milk, and cod liver oil. The sun also contributes significantly to the daily production of vitamin D. The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones. It is used, alone or in combination with calcium, to increase bone mineral density and decrease fractures. Recently, research also suggests that vitamin D may provide protection from osteoporosis, hypertension (high blood pressure), cancer, and several autoimmune diseases. It helps the intestine absorb nutrients, including calcium and phosphorus. This ensures strong bones and a strong immune system. Vitamin D provides calcium balance in the body that prevents osteoporosis or arthritis. Vitamin D regulates blood pressure, reduces stress and tension, relieves body aches and pains by reducing muscle spasms, reduces respiratory infections, helps in differentiation of the cells, aids in insulin secretion, helps fight depression, improves overall skin health by reducing wrinkles, makes skin soft, strong, and smooth, and improves cardiovascular strength by providing a protective lining for the blood vessels.

Although vitamin D supplements are not as effective as synthesizing vitamin D naturally by the body, they are still effective in treating several medical conditions. Vitamin D fortified food products and fortified milk can also provide this essential nutrient to our body.

What Athletes Should Learn from Marcus Lattimore’s Injury. (PART 1)

Rehabilitation is not new to Marcus Lattimore and neither is hard work. For what appeared to be an injury that would take a young career there is a lot of promise ahead for the young gamecocks running back. Lattimore returned this year from a knee injury that he sustained last season. He was building a very strong campaign for the gamecocks as the leading ball carrier and pass catching threat for the backfield. Then in the second quarter of South Carolina’s game against Tennessee on Saturday, October 27, 2012 Lattimore fell to a devastating knee injury. What appeared to be a career ending dislocated knee could be an injury Lattimore returns from. Marcus Lattimore suffered a significant impact to the front of his right knee. The ensuing hyper extension of the knee resulted in injury to several ligaments. There were no fractures or additional injuries according to the team physician Dr. Jeffrey Guy. Lattimore’s surgically repaired left knee was on injured going to play.

So the question is what can at least learn from Lattimore’s experience? We know in football, basketball and all sports there is risk for injury. It’s always sad to see any of athlete let alone a big time performer like Lattimore fall to injury. Here some MAJOR important points I believe all athletes can learn from this young athlete’s experience.

1. Athletes Should should possess knowledge to prevent and heal injuries through proper diet and Supplement Program.
Getting injured is one of the most difficult and frustrating things in an athlete’s life. The best way to stop injuries is to of course, prevent them. However in Some cases like Lattimore’s devastating knee injury it’s impossible to prevent but there are proactive measures athletes can take while they are healthy that can help strengthen and quicken their recovery and healing process. An athlete’s diet makes a HUGE difference in the recovery and healing process. Feeding and fueling the body will help to strengthen and maintain the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bone in the best and strongest condition possible. Giving your body the nutrition it needs plays a direct role in enhancing performance, preventing injury/sickness, strengthening and speeding up your recovery process. In contrast, a diet high in refined sugars, starches, and poor quality protein will increase inflammation and lead to a higher likelihood of injury.

So What’s the optimal diet for an athlete or high performer? Most importantly athletes should be sure they are getting high quality, adequate amounts of protein. Healthy abundant protein helps to make and repair muscle, strengthen bones and tendons, and allow for proper function of cells.

The best protein sources are grass fed meats which are full of muscle building conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), anti-inflammatory omega 3 fats, and muscle building zinc and iron. Other good sources of protein are wild caught fatty fish, free range poultry, and organic eggs. – Omega 3 Fats – provide plenty of fuel for energy and anti-inflammatory properties to heal and protect the damage that hard training wreaks on the body.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid(CLA) helps to provide the fuel the body needs to power through a demanding practice. Antioxidants are extremely important to the athlete.

Exercise, especially intense exercise produces large amounts of free radicals which lead to damage and breakdown of tissue within the body. Eating a large variety of brightly colored fresh, organic fruit and vegetables will go a long way to help supply the body with large amounts of antioxidants. Go raw! Raw fruits and vegetables are not only powerhouses of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals; they also contain massive amounts of enzymes. Enzymes are proven healers of damaged tissue.

The best diet is at least fifty percent raw to prevent and heal injuries. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant and will play a role in the blocking of the damage due to free radicals in the body. Because this vitamin is so important for the repair of the connective and cartilage tissue, it is helpful to add extra to your diet when injured.

Athletes should eat foods that are high in vitamin C such as red peppers, papaya, cantaloupe, kale, oranges and broccoli. Vitamin C is a key ingredient to rebuilding collagen, connective tissue and repairing damage in the body. It is also important to promote the healthy maintenance of cartilage and bones as well as teeth.

Vitamin A is also important because of its rebuilding properties. Its main function in the body is to make new white blood cells to help fight off infection. A higher intake of vitamin A will also help repair any microtears that occurred in the body after a hard workout so it is definitely a valuable tool for any runner, cyclist or weight lifter.
