There are 3 things Athletes should do to achieve their full potential and reach success both on and off the field; 1. TRANSFORM MINDSET, 2. EXPAND SKILL SETS and 3. DEVELOP STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIPS. Let’s take a look at how we can apply these ideas.

1. TRANSFORM MINDSET. Athletes must learn to “Think Different” about making money. Athletes could benefit greatly from Personal Development, Self-Education and Financial Education. Over 60% of NFL players are broke after finishing their careers. Over 70% of NBA Players file Bankrupt after their playing days are up. Athletes need to be educated about how money works and how they can get their money working for them. With our Program we are Empowering athletes to know the difference between Profit vs Wages, Business Owner vs Employee and Passive Income vs Active Income. We are teaching our students to be Entrepreneurs and Producers vs only Consumers.

2. EXPAND SKILL SET: Athletes must throw away the dependent Employee mindset and adapt a more independent Entrepreneurial mindset. “People who are unable to motivate themselves must be content with mediocrity” ~ Andrew Carnegie. The Domestic Economy that America once was in over and now we live in an Entrepreneur Economy. Athletes must develop Communication Skills, Social Media Marketing skills, learn how to Sell and Develop customers and Develop Goal Setting skills.

3. STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIPS: Athletes must learn to develop Achievement Driven relationships that assets to them and not liabilities. In essence, if we want to direct our lives, we must take control of our consistent actions. Everything in the world we want to do or get done, we must do with and through people. Having a Mentor is #1 in this category.

What Athletes Should Learn from Marcus Lattimore’s Injury. (PART 1)

Rehabilitation is not new to Marcus Lattimore and neither is hard work. For what appeared to be an injury that would take a young career there is a lot of promise ahead for the young gamecocks running back. Lattimore returned this year from a knee injury that he sustained last season. He was building a very strong campaign for the gamecocks as the leading ball carrier and pass catching threat for the backfield. Then in the second quarter of South Carolina’s game against Tennessee on Saturday, October 27, 2012 Lattimore fell to a devastating knee injury. What appeared to be a career ending dislocated knee could be an injury Lattimore returns from. Marcus Lattimore suffered a significant impact to the front of his right knee. The ensuing hyper extension of the knee resulted in injury to several ligaments. There were no fractures or additional injuries according to the team physician Dr. Jeffrey Guy. Lattimore’s surgically repaired left knee was on injured going to play.

So the question is what can at least learn from Lattimore’s experience? We know in football, basketball and all sports there is risk for injury. It’s always sad to see any of athlete let alone a big time performer like Lattimore fall to injury. Here some MAJOR important points I believe all athletes can learn from this young athlete’s experience.

1. Athletes Should should possess knowledge to prevent and heal injuries through proper diet and Supplement Program.
Getting injured is one of the most difficult and frustrating things in an athlete’s life. The best way to stop injuries is to of course, prevent them. However in Some cases like Lattimore’s devastating knee injury it’s impossible to prevent but there are proactive measures athletes can take while they are healthy that can help strengthen and quicken their recovery and healing process. An athlete’s diet makes a HUGE difference in the recovery and healing process. Feeding and fueling the body will help to strengthen and maintain the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bone in the best and strongest condition possible. Giving your body the nutrition it needs plays a direct role in enhancing performance, preventing injury/sickness, strengthening and speeding up your recovery process. In contrast, a diet high in refined sugars, starches, and poor quality protein will increase inflammation and lead to a higher likelihood of injury.

So What’s the optimal diet for an athlete or high performer? Most importantly athletes should be sure they are getting high quality, adequate amounts of protein. Healthy abundant protein helps to make and repair muscle, strengthen bones and tendons, and allow for proper function of cells.

The best protein sources are grass fed meats which are full of muscle building conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), anti-inflammatory omega 3 fats, and muscle building zinc and iron. Other good sources of protein are wild caught fatty fish, free range poultry, and organic eggs. – Omega 3 Fats – provide plenty of fuel for energy and anti-inflammatory properties to heal and protect the damage that hard training wreaks on the body.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid(CLA) helps to provide the fuel the body needs to power through a demanding practice. Antioxidants are extremely important to the athlete.

Exercise, especially intense exercise produces large amounts of free radicals which lead to damage and breakdown of tissue within the body. Eating a large variety of brightly colored fresh, organic fruit and vegetables will go a long way to help supply the body with large amounts of antioxidants. Go raw! Raw fruits and vegetables are not only powerhouses of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals; they also contain massive amounts of enzymes. Enzymes are proven healers of damaged tissue.

The best diet is at least fifty percent raw to prevent and heal injuries. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant and will play a role in the blocking of the damage due to free radicals in the body. Because this vitamin is so important for the repair of the connective and cartilage tissue, it is helpful to add extra to your diet when injured.

Athletes should eat foods that are high in vitamin C such as red peppers, papaya, cantaloupe, kale, oranges and broccoli. Vitamin C is a key ingredient to rebuilding collagen, connective tissue and repairing damage in the body. It is also important to promote the healthy maintenance of cartilage and bones as well as teeth.

Vitamin A is also important because of its rebuilding properties. Its main function in the body is to make new white blood cells to help fight off infection. A higher intake of vitamin A will also help repair any microtears that occurred in the body after a hard workout so it is definitely a valuable tool for any runner, cyclist or weight lifter.

College was Fun! In fact college was so fun my freshman year I literally forgot I was there to learn and prepare for my own future! I was playing football and hanging out. When I did go to class I slept half the time! Oh and the ladies! Let’s just say I had girls on my mind. Then one day my mom called my phone and said she received a letter in the mail from VSU. The letter was a Academic Probation Warning Letter informing me and my family that if I did not improve my academic standing I will be kicked out of school! This was a tremendous wake up call. I couldn’t believe I had been so dumb! Why was I wasting my time? Why was I not realizing and taking advantage of the awesome opportunity and privilege I had to get a great college education and be the first in my family to graduate college? From that moment forward I decided that I was going to take personal responsibility of my own life! I had to choose to take control of my own Future! In order to do this I had to first change the way I was thinking! I decided that I would learn how to “Love Learning!” Did you hear me Student-Athletes?! In order to be Successful in life you have to learn how to “Love Learning!” You have to develop a hunger and burning desire to learn!

Oh so you don’t like that biology class because you are a Mass Communications major and you can’t see any reason why you need to learn about plants? You better learn to “Love Learning!” Oh so you don’t like reading books about History? You better learn to “Love Learning!” Oh so you don’t feel like studying for that exam because you’re satisfied with average and mediocre grades? You better learn to “Love Learning!”

So how do you Develop an appetite for education? Well let me ask you what is your Passion? What do you love doing in your free time? What are your talents? If you didn’t have to work a job and you could do any type of work you choose what would you Do? Learn to develop a sense of purpose for your life! Once you develop a sense of purpose for your own life and you see a Vision of yourself accomplishing a Goal, learning will become easy to you! Instead of going to class and collecting meaningless “data” and “info” you will go to class to gain Knowledge that you can apply in efforts to accomplish your goal!

I started applying the philosophy that I was in control of only two things in my life. That’s my ACTION and my ATTITUDE! No matter what, you can control these two things always! I graduated on time with my B.A. in Mass Communications! I was so excited that I went ahead and enrolled in Graduate school at VSU. While in Grad school I finished up my NCAA athletic eligibility playing football while earning my Masters degree in Sport Management. In 2009 I was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Team in recognition of my accomplishments as a college scholar-athlete who excels in both Academics and Athletics!
