The purpose of this information presented in this blog is to help explain why it’s so important to maintain healthy blood sugar levels which are already within the normal range and the steps you can take to keep your blood sugar levels under control. Although blood sugar imbalances are usually associated with being overweight even healthy non-overweight people can experience them. Elevated blood sugar levels are an indicator of pre-diabetes. If these imbalances are not corrected they can lead to TYPE ll DIABETES.

Globally the incident of type II diabetes is alarming. With over 230 million cases worldwide and 7 million new cases yearly. Type II diabetes used to be called Adult Onset Diabetes but this is no longer the case because millions of kids are being diagnosed with this condition. All forms of diabetes begin with an imbalance in blood sugar levels.

When you consume food or beverages carbohydrates are usually broken down to glucose or blood sugar. The body’s main form of energy. This Glucose then enters the bloodstream. In response to increased levels of blood glucose the pancreas produces insulin which is released into the bloodstream. CHROMIUM is a very important nutrient that helps insulin bind to the insulin receptors that line each cell membrane. These bonds allow insulin to travel from in the bloodstream to the cells and to be converted into energy. Without a sufficient amount of chromium in the body both insulin and glucose build up in the bloodstream and the cells do not receive much needed energy to keep the human body operating at an optimal level.

“Slight Edge Performance Program”: Alarming Vitamin D Deficiencies in NFL Football Players

According to a study presented at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine 2011 Annual Meeting, vitamin D deficiency might be unusually high among American football players, with black players and players who have suffered muscle injuries showing significantly lower vitamin D levels.

According to the study, researchers tested the vitamin D levels of 89 professional football players from the New York Giants National Football League (NFL) team in the spring of 2010 and found that 27 players (30.3%) had deficient vitamin D levels (below 20 ng/mL). As many as 45 players (50.6%) had levels consistent with vitamin D insufficiency (between 20 and 31.9 ng/mL). Only 17 players (19.1%) had values within normal limits (above 32 ng/mL).

Lead author Michael K. Shindle, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon from Summit Medical Group, in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey said, “We found that an alarming percentage of players — 80.9% — had abnormal vitamin D levels of less than 32 ng/mL.”

Dr. Michael K. Shindle added that all players sustaining injuries that caused them to miss at least 1 practice or game had vitamin D levels that were significantly lower than players without muscle injury.

The study done with the NFL’s New York Giants consisted of 31 white players and 58 black players. Blacks tend to have lower vitamin D levels than whites in the general population. “Up to 93% of African American players had abnormal vitamin D levels, compared with 31% of white players,” Dr. Shindle said.

What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is an essential vitamin required by the body for the proper absorption of calcium, bone development, control of cell growth, neuromuscular functioning, proper immune functioning, and alleviation of inflammation.

Why is Vitamin D important for good health and athletic performance?
Dr. Shindle says, “It’s also been shown that vitamin D can increase the number of type II, or fast twitch, muscle fibers.” This is very important for athletes who want to get faster and increase their speed.

According to a 2009 study published in “Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise,” maintaining proper levels of vitamin D helps your body to properly use calcium, a mineral required for proper functioning of your muscles, including fast twitch muscle fibers. Consuming vitamin D can increase the number of fast twitch muscle fibers within your muscle tissue, as well as increase the size of these fibers. Overall, this translates to an increase in athletic performance.

Inadequate levels of vitamin D can lead to a weakened immune system, increased cancer risk, poor hair growth, and osteomalacia, a condition of weakened muscles and bones.

Thomas, who signed a four-year $28.4 million deal in March, spent the entire 2011 season on injured reserve. Thomas also tore the ACL in his right knee in 2005 while at USC.

The NBA had four ACL blowouts last season (2011′-2012′) including Chicago’a Derrick Rose, New York’s Iman Shumpert, Minnesota’s Ricky Rubio and Oklahoma City’s Eric Maynor.

Leandro Barbosa a guard for the Boston Celtics fell to a torn ACL on Feb 12, 2013. Lou Williams Guard for the Atlanta Hawks suffered a Torn right knee ligament Jan 18, 2013. Rajon Rondo Point Guard for the Boston Celtics tore his right ACL on Jan 27, 2013.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III had January 9th, 2013 to repair two torn ligaments in his right knee. The two-hour procedure was meant to repair Griffin’s torn lateral cruciate ligament or LCL – a band of fibrous tissue that connects the thigh bone to the outer bone of the lower leg – as well as his anterior cruciate ligament or ACL, which he tore initially in 2009. The new ACL injury occurred in grafted tissue used to treat the 2009 tear.

South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore, who tore an ACL in 2011 and battled all the way back, suffered an injury that looked as ugly as any we’ve ever seen playing against University of Tennessee in October 27th 2013.

An ACL injury is the tearing of the anterior cruciate (KROO-she-ate) ligament, or ACL, inside your knee joint. An ACL injury most commonly occurs during sports that involve sudden stops and changes in direction — such as football, basketball, soccer, tennis and volleyball. Depending on the severity of your ACL injury, treatment may include surgery to replace the torn ligament followed by rehabilitation exercises to help you regain strength and stability.
