“Slight Edge Performance Program”: Alarming Vitamin D Deficiencies in NFL Football Players

According to a study presented at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine 2011 Annual Meeting, vitamin D deficiency might be unusually high among American football players, with black players and players who have suffered muscle injuries showing significantly lower vitamin D levels.

According to the study, researchers tested the vitamin D levels of 89 professional football players from the New York Giants National Football League (NFL) team in the spring of 2010 and found that 27 players (30.3%) had deficient vitamin D levels (below 20 ng/mL). As many as 45 players (50.6%) had levels consistent with vitamin D insufficiency (between 20 and 31.9 ng/mL). Only 17 players (19.1%) had values within normal limits (above 32 ng/mL).

Lead author Michael K. Shindle, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon from Summit Medical Group, in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey said, “We found that an alarming percentage of players — 80.9% — had abnormal vitamin D levels of less than 32 ng/mL.”

Dr. Michael K. Shindle added that all players sustaining injuries that caused them to miss at least 1 practice or game had vitamin D levels that were significantly lower than players without muscle injury.

The study done with the NFL’s New York Giants consisted of 31 white players and 58 black players. Blacks tend to have lower vitamin D levels than whites in the general population. “Up to 93% of African American players had abnormal vitamin D levels, compared with 31% of white players,” Dr. Shindle said.

What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is an essential vitamin required by the body for the proper absorption of calcium, bone development, control of cell growth, neuromuscular functioning, proper immune functioning, and alleviation of inflammation.

Why is Vitamin D important for good health and athletic performance?
Dr. Shindle says, “It’s also been shown that vitamin D can increase the number of type II, or fast twitch, muscle fibers.” This is very important for athletes who want to get faster and increase their speed.

According to a 2009 study published in “Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise,” maintaining proper levels of vitamin D helps your body to properly use calcium, a mineral required for proper functioning of your muscles, including fast twitch muscle fibers. Consuming vitamin D can increase the number of fast twitch muscle fibers within your muscle tissue, as well as increase the size of these fibers. Overall, this translates to an increase in athletic performance.

Inadequate levels of vitamin D can lead to a weakened immune system, increased cancer risk, poor hair growth, and osteomalacia, a condition of weakened muscles and bones.

Other Benefits of vitamin D?
•It is crucial for the absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorous which help support and maintain healthy bones.
•It is an immune system regulator.
•It may be an important way to arm the immune system against disorders like the common cold.

What is the best way to get vitamin D?
Vitamin D for humans is obtained from sun exposure, food and supplements. Sunlight promotes sufficient vitamin D synthesis in the skin. Foods that contain vitamin D include fish oils, fatty fish, beef liver, cheese, egg yolks, and certain mushrooms.

Personally I have been taking a plant based food supplement called NUTRILITE® DOUBLE X® since my college football days at Virginia State University. I noticed how I had more energy to train harder and workout longer. I also found that my body was recovering faster from workouts and competition. My friend Amanda is a former college soccer player and in 2008 she recommended that I use it to fill all my nutrition gaps. She said Double X was the best and in my personal opinion she was telling the truth! NUTRILITE® is the world’s leading brand of vitamin, mineral, and dietary supplements. It’s formulated by NUTRILITE, the only global vitamin and mineral brand to grow, harvest, and process plants on their own certified organic farms.**

When you compare NUTRILITE DOUBLE X® to Centrum® and GNC Solotron®, there’s really no comparison! Double X contains more of almost every vitamin and mineral, plus many more plant concentrates, which provide superb antioxidant protection.

Why do I need a supplement?
The American Medical Association recommends that all adults take one multivitamin daily. This is true even if you already eat a diet rich in fresh, whole, natural foods, because the foods you consume often don’t supply all the vitamins and minerals you need, at the recommended levels. If you’re going to supplement, why not start with the world’s best multi? NUTRILITE® DOUBLE X® Vitamin/Mineral/Phytonutrient.

World-class Olympic sprinter and former world’s fastest man Asafa Powell is the perfect example of an elite athlete who plant based supplementation made a tremendous difference for and the reason for that is he was now provided with the nutrients he needed to operate at maximum efficiency.

Asafa Powell broke the world record for the 100-meter sprint in June 2005, three months after adding NUTRILITE™ DOUBLE X™ to his training regimen.

In 2005, the then 22-year-old Asafa Powell broke the men’s 100-meter world record at a meet in Athens, Greece becoming the world Record holder in the 100-meter sprint — just three months after his brother introduced him to NUTRILITE DOUBLE X. Asafa’s brother Donovan, who also was a world-class sprinter, was introduced to the NUTRILITE brand by his wife’s parents. Appreciating the benefits he received from DOUBLE X, Donovan supplied the multivitamin to his younger brother when he complained of low energy levels during his training early in 2005.

“Taking DOUBLE X was the only change I made to how I had been training,” says Asafa. “After I started taking it, I felt I had more energy to train harder and run faster. I am very careful about what I consume so I appreciate the balanced vitamin and mineral content plus the rich, all-natural plant concentrates in DOUBLE X.”

The world class runner said: “When I run, I don’t think about anyone else. I don’t think about my competition, I just do what I have to do. Nutrilite is a lot like me that way, because they don’t consider the competition in what they do, they just focus on being the best in their field,” he says. “I am confident that DOUBLE X and NUTRILITE will help me power up for the competitions yet to come.”

Why and how did good nutriton Help Asafa Powell improve his training, increase his speed and become the world’s fastest man?

Your skeletal muscles contain two main classifications of muscle fibers: slow twitch and fast twitch muscles. Healthy skeletal muscles play a huge role in your day-to-day functioning — they support your posture, as well as allow for movement and locomotion.

Slow-twitch muscle fibers contract at a relatively slow rate and play an important role in muscle endurance. Fast twitch muscle fibers contract rapidly, and allow for explosive movements. The health of your fast twitch muscle fibers relies partially on the quality of your diet, and consuming specific nutrients helps to nourish these muscle fibers.

VITAMIN E
One nutrient that can benefit your fast twitch muscle fibers is vitamin E, a family of eight antioxidant vitamins. When exercising our muscles produce metabolic activity that include the numerous chemical reactions required for muscle contraction that also generate a number of harmful chemicals called free radicals. Free radicals can damage your muscle fibers, causing tissue damage called oxidative stress that can lead to the destruction of muscle fibers. Vitamin E can help suppress the breakdown of fast twitch muscle fibers in the muscles in response to oxidative stress. Eating foods rich in vitamin E and also taking plant based vitamin E supplements might help to prevent fast twitch muscle fiber breakdown due to free radical exposure. Buy NUTRILITE DOUBLE X® and give your body 500% daily value of vitamin E.

VITAMIN D
Vitamin D also might have a beneficial effect on your fast twitch muscle fibers. Maintaining proper levels of vitamin D helps your body to properly use calcium, a mineral required for proper functioning of your muscles, including fast twitch muscle fibers. Consuming vitamin D can increase the number of fast twitch muscle fibers within your muscle tissue, as well as increase the size of these fibers, according to a 2009 study published in “Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.” Overall, this translates to an increase in athletic performance. Buy NUTRILITE DOUBLE X® and give your body 100% daily value of vitamin D. Research shows that most people don’t get enough vitamin D in their diet. NUTRILITE Vitamin D3 provides the naturally occurring form of vitamin D your body produces when exposed to sunlight – in an amount that is equal to 20 glasses of milk.

While vitamins D and E might prove beneficial for maintaining healthy fast twitch muscle fibers, maintaining healthy muscles relies on a number of factors. Regular physical activity helps maintain or improve the size and numbers of fast twitch muscle fibers as well as maintains the health of your muscles as a whole. In addition, other nutritional factors, such as protein intake, help to determine the size of your muscles and muscle fibers.

PROTEIN
Your fast twitch muscle fibers — as well as your general muscle health — rely on adequate protein intake. Protein makes up a significant portion of your muscle tissue, and your muscle cells must continually generate new protein to maintain themselves. Eating foods rich in protein increases your intake of amino acids, the building blocks used to make protein within your cells. Fast twitch muscle fibers, in particular, require the amino acid beta-alanine. Beta-alanine is important to the production of carnosine, a compound associated with improved athletic performance and found in high levels in healthy fast twitch muscle fibers. Consume lean meats, eggs, dairy, soy and quinoa as sources of beta-alanine, as well as other amino acids required for healthy fast twitch muscles. Fuel your muscle-building power. The ultimate combination of flavor and performance to help fuel the building and rebuilding of lean muscle mass. 25 grams of protein and a nutritious blend of ingredients and antioxidants help muscles recover and rebuild, while boosting energy stores (or muscle energy) to ensure you are ready for your next workout. FEEL THE ENERGY. KNOW THE POWER.™BUY NUTRILITE® Whey Protein Bar – Cookies and Cream.

OTHER IMPORTANT NUTRIENTS
In addition, minerals like sodium, calcium and potassium help your nerves communicate with fast twitch muscle fibers, allowing for controlled muscle contraction and movement. To best nourish your fast twitch muscles, follow a balanced diet rich in lean proteins, fresh produce, whole grains, legumes and healthy fats. If you’re interested in increasing your fast twitch muscle fiber number or size, talk to a registered dietitian or sports scientist to recommend a diet and exercise program to help reach your goals.
